What is air pollution?
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe! It simply means the release of dangerous pollutants into the air and the environment as a whole
What are the causes?
Most of the air pollution we experience comes from our daily energy use and production. For example when we put on our generators, the fumes it produces can really choke the atmosphere and affect our breathing. This may eventually lead to long-term health issues.
There are two major types of air pollution namely: smog and soot
Smog:
Smog occurs when emissions from combusting fossil fuels react with sunlight and pollute the atmosphere
Soot:
Soot is made up of tiny particles of chemicals, soil, smoke, dust, or allergens, in the form of gas or solids, that are carried in the air.
They both come from the similar sources such as vehicles, factories, incinerators, engines and generators. They are emitted from anything that combusts fossil fuels(coal, gas, or natural gas)
What are its effects on Health ?:
Air pollution is a significant risk factor for a number of pollution-related diseases and health conditions such as respiratory infections, heart disease, stroke and lung cancer. It may also include difficulty in breathing, coughing, asthma and worsening of existing respiratory and cardiac conditions.
Death:
Also,it is a common cause of death.Due to available facts, the World Health Organization estimated in 2014 onwards that every year air pollution causes the premature death of some 7 million people worldwide.
Cancer and Lung diseases
Research conducted by W.H.O. also shows that increased risk of Cancer and lung diseases such as asthma can result from exposure to fumes, generator smoke and traffic-related air pollution.
What are the Economic effects?
The world bank discovered through research that air pollution costs the world economy $5 trillion per year due to productivity losses(bad job performance) and reduced quality of life. These losses occur as a result of deaths from air-pollution related diseases. Also, the research also revealed that one out of ten deaths in 2013 was caused by diseases associated with air pollution.
How can you protect yourself from air pollution?
There are several ways in which we can protect ourselves from the dangers of air pollution.
1.When jogging or exercising,it is advisable to stay away from heavily trafficked roads
2.It is also prudent to Stay indoors if the air quality outdoors is bad.
3.In addition to avoiding smoky vehicles and environments, making good choices about your source of power supply also helps. There are quite a number of renewable forms of energy and Solar is one of them. With a good Solar Home System, you can power all your appliances 24-hrs a day at an affordable amount – smoke-free.Having one gives you a clean bill of health.
